58 Fibers: Natural

Natural fibers are fibrous polymeric composite materials obtained from natural renewable sources, namely plants and animals. Common natural fibers sourced from plants include cotton, flax, hemp, bamboo, sisal, and jute (Figure 58.1). Their main component is cellulose. Examples of natural fibers from animals include wool, silk, angora, and mohair. Their main components are proteins.

The earliest evidence of humans using fibers is the discovery of wool and dyed flax fibers found in a prehistoric cave in the Republic of Georgia that date back to 36,000 BP. As far back as 3000 BC, people in China were making cloth out of hemp. Records show that in 1500 BC India cotton was being weaved into fabrics. ...
