Intumescent fire retardant refers to material systems that char and expand when exposed to extreme heat, thus protecting the material underneath or sealing a gap in the event of a fire.
Intumescent fire-retardant materials are halogen free. Generally, they contain three major components: 1) an acid source, such as phosphate; 2) a carbonific agent such as polyols; and 3) a blowing agent such as melamine.
Intumescent fire retardants have been used successfully to improve the flame retardancy of polymers, especially for polyolefin, such as PP, PE, EVA, etc. They are also used as fireproof coatings and sealings as well.
