36 Controlled Release
Controlled release (or controlled delivery of drugs) refers to a predesigned drug delivery in which the active drug is available at the site of action at the right concentration for the correct time and duration.
The idea of controlled release from polymers dates back to the 1960s when Folkman and Long employed silicone rubber for a prolonged drug therapy. Basically, the drug delivery system structure is designed to facilitate the dosage, to control the release duration, and to minimize the harm to the patient by reducing the dosage frequency
