Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) is a technique in which deformation of the sample under non-oscillating stress is monitored against time or temperature while the temperature of the sample in a specified atmosphere is programmed. The stress may be compression, tension, flexure, or torsion.
TMA is believed to have developed from hardness or penetration tests and was used on polymers back in 1948.
Compared to DMA, TMA applies a constant static force to a material and watches the material change as temperature or time varies. It reports dimensional changes. On the other hand, DMA applies an oscillatory force at a set frequency to the sample and reports changes in stiffness and damping. ...
