41 Cyclopolymerization
Cyclopolymerization is an alternating intra-intermolecular chain mechanism for polymer formation which leads to cyclic structures in the main polymer chain.
Cyclopolymerization was first discovered by George B. Butler and Robert L. Bunch in 1949 through their report on polymerization of unsaturated quaternary ammonium compounds (Figure 41.1). Now cyclopolymerization is classified as the eighth major structural aspect of synthetic polymer chemistry to be established, for it has been shown to be quite a general phenomenon.
Depending on the nature of the monomers and the reaction conditions, cyclopolymerization can be initiated not only by free radicals but also ions or metathesis catalysts. ...
