Polycarbonates (PCs) are a group of thermoplastic polymers with organic functional groups linked together by carbonate groups (–O–(C=O)–O–).
PCs were first discovered in 1898 by Alfred Einhorn, a German scientist working at the University of Munich. A PC of bisphenol A (Figure 145.1), or PC plastic, was independently synthesized by polymer chemists Dr. H. Schnell of Bayer AG, Germany, and Dr. Daniel W. Fox of General Electric Company, United State, in 1953. Then Bayer began commercial production under the trade name Makrolon in 1958. GE began production under the name Lexan in 1960.
