Ionomer is a polymer that comprises repeat units of both electrically neutral repeating units and a fraction of ionized units.
Ionomers have been used in film applications for nearly 40 years.
A major use of ionomers is in semi-permeable membranes and ion-selective membranes. They can be applied in a variety of electrical and energy applications. Examples include the cation exchange membrane for fuel cells, which allow only protons or specific ions to cross the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM).
Another major use is for heat seal, hot tack, and forming operations because of their unique properties derived from their multiphase morphology.
