Acid-degradable polymers are a kind of pH responsive polymers containing an acid-degradable linkage. Some acid-degradable chemical bonds are presented in Figure 2.1.
Polyorthoesters were the first acid-degradable polymers and have been investigated since 1970. After polyorthoesters, polyacetals are the most studied acid-degradable polymer. Other acid-degradable polymers investigated include polyurethane based on macrodiol containing acid-cleavable hydrazone, linear polyhydrazone, and water soluble poly(cis-aconityl).
