When you fire your flash through anything, it eats up a little of the power of the light, and while a diffusion dome can help when you’re shooting up close to your subject indoors, or bouncing your flash off the ceiling (again, see page 77), they don’t really do anything meaningful outdoors because there aren’t walls, a roof, or any other large surfaces to bounce off. Same thing when you’re shooting far away from your subject, or when you’re in a really big room. That’s when I would take the diffusion dome off the flash, so it doesn’t eat up any power and helps your batteries last longer.
