When I think of an egg-crate grid, I think of it for when I want to focus my light without spill, but I still want it to be soft, beautiful light. But, when I’m shooting a portrait of an athlete, then I want hard, edgier light (not soft, beautiful light), so I go with a bare flash (no softbox at all) with a metal grid over the flash head. These grids work like a charm to create a spotlight effect, like you’d see in a theater production.
