There was a time when using an umbrella to soften your light was a really viable choice, because there were few softboxes made for hot shoe flash, and they were either expensive, very clunky, hard to transport, or all three. The reason I’m not a fan of umbrellas is that they make controlling your light a lot harder because the light kinda spills all over.
