Put your flash on top of your camera in the hot shoe, and then put a serious diffuser in front of your flash. Not the snap-on diffusion dome that comes with your flash—I’m talking about something much more substantial (and one that gives tremendously better results). I like MagMod’s MagSphere diffuser (see above), which creates soft, omni-directional light that doesn’t cut the power output from your flash very much, so it doesn’t drain your batteries really fast like some others out there do.
