A popular, and perhaps a bit more formal look for backgrounds is to have a graduated look, where one side of the background is lit, and then the light gets darker and darker as it moves to the other side of the background. It kind of looks like you dragged the Gradient tool across the background in Photoshop, going from light to dark.
