So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Creating a Graduated Background Look
A popular, and perhaps a bit more formal look for backgrounds is to have a graduated look, where one side of the background is lit, and then the light gets darker and darker as it moves to the other side of the background. It kind of looks like you dragged the Gradient tool across the background in Photoshop, going from light to dark. You do this by moving the background flash to the side and raking the light across the background.
