There’s a reason it’s often simply called “off-camera flash,” and that’s because (like I mentioned in Chapter 1) you need to get that dang thing off the top of your camera! To make beautiful portraits of people, you want shadows, depth, and dimension, and to get that type of look, you’re going to need to get your hot shoe flash off your hot shoe and onto a light stand (or have a friend hold it for you).
