Sometimes you don’t need to fully light someone outdoors, but you just need a little something—just a little bit of light to fill in the shadows. Generally, you can’t do bounce flash outdoors (ya know, seeing as the clouds are usually pretty high up there; see page 77 for more on bounce flash), but one thing you can try is to aim your flash straight up (no angle, whatsoever), and turn its power up pretty high (start at 1/2 power and see how that works), but make sure to pull out the little white bounce card that is tucked down inside the little slot right next to the flash head.
