It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Lighting the Group Formals
This is when I go with one big softbox, and with the Westcott Mega JS Apollo 50x50" collapsible softbox (see page 68), you can cover the group formals with just one flash, up to 20 people, no sweat. You will be cranking your flash up to 1/1 power, but it’ll be nice, soft, directional light—just make sure you move your softbox back about 10 feet, so you evenly light across the group. If you get any closer, you’ll start to have light fall-off on the people and one side will be lit darker than on the other side, and it makes for a really funky-looking group shot.
