This is where it really starts to get fun, because once you have your flash positioned at that 45° angle to your subject, you can leave it right where it is, or you can choose to make your image look more dramatic by putting more of their face in shadow, or choose a brighter, flatter look with fewer shadows. You do this by moving the flash on an arc. Here’s an example: If you put the flash directly beside your subject, aiming at them from the 3 o’clock position, they are being lit totally from the side, so half their face would be hit (the side closest to the flash), and the other half would be completely in shadow. ...
