On location, you don’t always have a flat area to put a light stand, so I prefer to mount my flash on the end of a monopod or boom pole (see page 137), but that counts on you having a friend to hold your boom pole. So, if you don’t have an assistant, you’ll probably have to at least try a light stand—just take a couple of sand bags with you so the light stand (and your flash) don’t go tumbling over and break when a gust of wind comes out of nowhere (sadly, I’m speaking from experience with this one).
