That’s easy: f/5.6. Why f/5.6? Well, why the heck not? It’s a lovely f-stop this time of year. Okay, actually, everybody needs a starting place and f/5.6 is what I always use as my starting f-stop when I’m working with flash. It’s a good, solid starting place, and I like it for a number of reasons, with one being that if I use a long lens (like my trusty 70–200mm) at f/5.6, when I zoom in on my subject, the background behind them goes a little bit soft and out of focus.
