If you have a friend or assistant with you, tell them to stand off to the side at about a 45° angle to your subject (position it the same way if you’re using a light stand). Since they are hand-holding your flash, make sure you don’t let them move so much that the side of your subject’s face farthest away from the light gets too shadowy (that can happen if they drift over to the side of your subject even by just a foot or two).
