So I never have to wonder during a shoot which flash is assigned to Group A, and which to Group B, and so on, I assign my groups in the order I set up the flashes. So, whichever flash is the main flash to light my subject, that is always Group A (it’s usually the first flash I set up). If I add a second flash behind my subject (maybe a hair light or a fill flash), then I put that one in Group B. If I add a flash on the background, that of course, goes in Group C. That way, I never have to walk over to any of the flashes to figure out which flash is in which group.
