If you’re using your flash for taking portraits, the kinda standard rule is that you’re going to position the flash up high (a bit higher than your subject’s head), and then you’ll tilt it (and your softbox or whatever) down toward your subject to mimic the sun, since that’s how we’re most comfortable seeing people lit—from above, aiming down. If you just buy a flash shoe mount and stick it on top of your light stand, or if you screw on the little foot that came with your flash to hold it on top of your light stand, your flash is going to be aimed straight—there’s no easy way to tilt it down toward your subject.
