The light that comes from your flash is some pretty darn harsh light. Think about it: The flash head itself (where the light comes out) is only about 3" long by 1" wide. It’s a nasty, little, bright flash of light—it’s absolutely blinding to look directly at, and on its own, there’s nothing beautiful about it. So, it’s up to us, the photographer, to do something to make it beautiful.
