This is a three-flash effect, but don’t that let throw you—it’s really easy to pull off. Generally, it’s done with a black or dark background, so let’s start there. Next, we’re going to set up two back lights—one on either side of our subject, aiming toward their hair at a 45° angle. If you have grids, put them on these two back flashes, as well, to keep the light from spilling everywhere (you don’t need softboxes on these back flashes).
