This one is really straightforward: the closer you put the softbox to your subject, the softer the light will be. So, when I want really soft light, I put the softbox as close as I can get it to my subject without actually seeing it in the frame. Of course, as you move the light closer to your subject, it gets brighter. So, when you move it in really close like this, you’ll have to lower the power of the flash, so it's not too bright. If I want harder, edgier light (like we usually want for portraits of men), then I move the softbox way back. Easy stuff.
