If the light from your flash seems out of balance with the natural light in the background (maybe the background seems too dark), you can brighten the background by lowering your shutter speed. Try taking it down from wherever it’s currently at (probably 1/125 of a second) to 1/100 of a second, or even down to 1/80 or 1/60 of a second (but don’t do this until you get your flash power setting pretty close, and the light on your subject looks pretty good).
