It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Protected Mode, Paging and PAE-36 Mode Are Disabled
As will be described in “The Register Settings on Initiation of the SM Handler” on page 1480, Protected Mode and Paging are disabled upon entry to SMM. If it has been enabled by the OS, PAE-36 Mode is disabled as well.
