Highlighted, or Selected, Icons

When an icon is dark, like the one shown to the left, it is highlighted, or selected—it got selected because you clicked once on it, or perhaps you typed the first letter or two of its name. Selecting is important because you must select an icon before you can do anything with it. For instance, menu commands, such as “Open” or “Duplicate,” only affect highlighted (selected) icons. Selecting is so important I wrote an entire chapter on it (Chapter 11).
