First of all, it’s a good idea to know whether you have a PostScript printer or a non-PostScript printer. Here’s an easy way to tell: If your printer cost less than $1,000, it’s non-PostScript.

It’s also good to know whether your printer is USB or serial. You can tell by the connector on the end of the printer cable, the end that plugs into the computer. If it’s small and rectangular, it’s USB. If it’s round, it’s serial. Most people at home or in a small office today have USB printers, especially if it’s plugged directly into your computer rather than on a network.
