Storing a Folder on the Desktop

You can always make a new folder directly on the Desktop: click on the Desktop to select it, then press Command Shift N.

Or you can drag any folder from a window to the Desktop. This doesn’t make a copy or an “alias” of the folder—it literally moves the original folder onto the Desktop (unless you are dragging it from another disk, in which case it does make a copy).

Or make an alias of a folder on the Desktop. The alias, as explained in Chapter 23, looks just like the original, but it’s actually kind of like a spirit image—it’s not really the folder.
