Unsaved Documents

Several times in this chapter I mentioned unsaved documents. If you try to Restart, Shut Down, or Log Out and the Mac finds documents that you haven’t saved yet, or that have had changes made that you didn’t save, a message will appear asking if you want to save them, as shown below.

Now, if you hit the button to Log Out, for instance, and then you walk away from your computer and the Mac finds an unsaved document, it will wait several minutes for you to respond. If you don’t respond because you’ve done something like left the building, then the Log Out (or Restart or Shut Down) process times out and your computer goes back to normal without logging out, restarting, or shutting down.
