It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Changing and Editing a Site’s Home Page
A powerful feature within SharePoint 2010 is the ability to change a site’s home page, with a Wiki, Web part or, if you’re using SharePoint Server 2010, a publishing page. In Chapter 5, I showed you how to work with different pages and addressed setting the site’s Home page. You should also refer to Chapter 12 to review potential risks when deleting a site’s Home page.
In this section, you learn how to change and edit a site’s home page in SharePoint Designer. You also learn how to place a client-side redirect on a home page where you’ve relocated content to another site.
