Page layouts were originally introduced in SharePoint Server 2007 and, as in SharePoint Server 2010, they underpin the Web content management and publishing functionality in SharePoint server sites. For those of you who are unfamiliar with page layouts, this section defines the core architectural pieces that makeup, or define, a page layout in SharePoint Server 2010.
