Taking External Lists Offline
When working with any list or document library in SharePoint, a common request from users is the ability to take information offline. This makes a lot of sense for remote workers and traveling sales people. Imagine being a traveling sales person who could have all product information and customer information with you wherever you are with no dependency on Internet connectivity. This functionality was available to some extent in SharePoint 2007 with the capability to sync contacts, calendar items, tasks, and documents with Outlook. There were some restrictions—documents couldn’t be edited—although changes to tasks, contacts, and calendar items could be made and synchronized back to the list in SharePoint.
