It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Creating a New Page Layout Content Type
In this section, you learn how to create a new page layout from scratch, as opposed to creating one based on an existing page layout content type.
Note
The following exercise assumes a SharePoint Server 2010 site with the publishing Feature activated.
In the first instance, you create a new content type which forms the basis of your new custom page layout. Use the following steps.
1. With your site open in SharePoint Designer, click the Content Types tab in the left-hand navigational menu. In Content Types, click the Content Type command in the ribbon’s New group.
2. In the Create a Content Type dialog, enter Events in the Name field. Optionally enter a description.
3. In the Select Parent Content Type ...
