Before creating new CSS styles, it’s a good idea to learn about the out-of-the-box styles because you override default styles to achieve the desired look and feel for your own sites. As already mentioned, the main SharePoint 2010 CSS file, named corev4.css, includes more than 7,000 lines of code. It’s unlikely that you’ll end up overriding every single style included in corev4.css, but there are some styles—such as styles related to navigation and the ribbon—that you’ll more than likely override in customizing your SharePoint sites.
