When you create new page layouts in SharePoint Designer, you have the option of basing those page layouts on existing page layouts or creating entirely new page layouts that leverage your own custom content types.
Note
Be careful if you choose to copy one of the existing, out-of-the-box page layouts. For instance, copying the contents from the Enterprise Wiki page layout and then pasting those contents into a page layout that is based on a different content type might result in any subsequent publishing pages created from that page layout failing to render if the source content type does not contain the same field controls (columns) as those used in the Enterprise Wiki page.
