This chapter targets SharePoint master pages. If you are unfamiliar with the general concept of master pages, see “ASP.NET Master Pages” at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wtxbf3hh.aspx. The process of creating master pages described in the article is fundamentally the same as working with master pages in SharePoint sites. The main difference when creating master pages in SharePoint Designer is that you are not able to create code behind files as discussed in the article. Otherwise, master pages in SharePoint sites form the basis for consistent look and feel, centralize the branding effort, and offer the most flexibility in designing SharePoint sites.
