A principal consideration around creating custom master pages is in the type of navigation that is applied to the site or site collection. For instance, by default, the v4.master page includes left-hand, top-level, and breadcrumb navigation. The majority of master pages I’ve created, especially for public-facing sites, exclude left-hand menus. In some instances, a customer has requested that some pages maintain a left-hand menu and that others do not include it, which can often be accomplished using both the System and Custom master pages. That is, one master page includes the left-hand menu (mostly the System master page) and the Site master page does not.
