Advantages of Page Layouts

Unlike basic content pages, page layouts provide a more structured and consistent page structure. Page layouts directly inherit from SharePoint content types, which define the page layout schema. The most important thing to point out about page layouts from the outset is that they are reusable; a page layout in SharePoint publishing sites acts like a site template from which you can create many publishing pages. In SharePoint Server 2010, this means you can add criteria to a page layout, such as common Web parts and controls used on a regular basis and then each time a new publishing page is created from the page layout those Web parts and controls are available on the newly created page.
