In SharePoint Server 2007, there were some additional options for customizing the page editing experience when working with publishing pages, including an option to add additional buttons to a publishing page editing menu. Several XML files were included in the root site of a site collection, which meant that you could adapt custom functionality on a site collection by site collection basis, including
• CustomEditingMenu.xml
• CustomQuickAccess.xml
• CustomSiteAction.xml
• RTE2ToolbarExtension.xml
The two main files used for manipulating the SharePoint Server 2007 editing toolbar were CustomEditingMenu.xml and RTE2ToolbarExtension.xml.
