Terminology and Page Layouts
Throughout this chapter, I use the terms publishing pages and page layouts. It’s important to understand that publishing pages are based on page layouts and are created in the Web interface. Page layouts, on the other hand, are created in SharePoint Designer and are stored in the site collection’s Master Page Gallery and made available when creating new publishing pages.
You also encounter the terms page layout content types and publishing content types because page layouts themselves are based on content types.
