Archiving Outlook Items

Another Outlook management tool is the AutoArchive feature. Older mail messages can be periodically and automatically archived in an archival Outlook data file. This archive.pst file is kept in the same location on your computer’s hard disk as the Outlook data source file that holds your Outlook profile information. You can archive mail messages and calendar items, such as appointments and tasks.

The point of archiving is to save email messages for later reference, but also to remove some of the older items that are floating around your mail folders. Items autoarchived by Outlook are also compressed, to take up less space.
