4.5 Fonts
Linux can basically handle all common font files—that is, TrueType, Type 1, and OpenType fonts. By default, quite a handsome selection of free fonts is already included. If you want to install more fonts, you have several options:

You can search for font packages using your distribution's package management tools—but this isn’t easy. While there are countless font packages available, many of them are only for specialized programs like LaTeX or for deprecated X applications.

You can copy your own font files or fonts freely available on the internet to the .fonts directory. The fonts can then be used in all programs without further configuration. (You may have to log out and log in again beforehand.)
