By default, security = user applies to Samba—in other words, user-level security. To enable the sample user peter to use a network directory, the following requirements must be met:
There must be a Linux account named peter on the server. This account is required for access rights management. Samba thus accesses the Linux access rights to decide which user may read or modify which file.
The Linux account doesn’t need to be active. Often it’s useful for security reasons to explicitly lock the account using passwd -l peter. This prevents Samba users from logging into the server using SSH.
