If you use Linux in combination with VirtualBox, want to use NVIDIA's proprietary graphics drivers, or need another hardware-specific kernel module that is missing from your distribution's kernel, you must compile the module to match the running kernel.
Compiling a module requires the C compiler gcc and make as well as other basic development tools. Most distributions make things easier by providing ready-made package selections or meta packages that reference all relevant packages (see Table 21.1).
