The LVM puts a logical layer between the file system and the partitions of the hard disk. The principle, merits, and terminology of LVM have already been explained in Chapter 2, Section 2.6. This section focuses on administrating LVM.
Before you can use LVM, you must create a data pool, called a volume group (VG). Physical volumes (PVs) serve as the building blocks of a volume group. These are specially marked partitions or RAID devices.
Within the pool you can define logical volumes (LVs). These are areas composed of memory blocks that later hold a file system. These memory blocks must always be a multiple of a physical extent (PE; 4 MiB by default).
