So far we have only installed Postfix. If you run Mutt or a similar email client directly on the server, you can send and receive emails. But if you want to work with external clients, such as Thunderbird on a Linux notebook computer or mail apps on a smartphone, they must be able to access the mail server's mailboxes.
Postfix doesn’t provide any functions for this; as a mail server, it only handles the SMTP protocol. The IMAP protocol has been designed to read and manage email on the server, while the POP protocol is hardly used anymore today. It allows you to retrieve emails from the server and transfer them to a local computer. The Dovecot program is responsible for these two protocols.
