Now that I’ve introduced you to complete backup tools in the first sections of this chapter, I will now present various low-level commands that will help you archive and back up files in different ways: tar, zip, rsync, rdiff-backup, rsnapshot, and more. These commands enable you to program your own backup scripts. For examples of such scripts, see Section 28.9 and Section 28.10.
At this point, I want to start with commands for compressing and archiving files. An initial overview is provided in Table 28.1.
