The various ext versions dominate the world of Linux file systems. The first version was used only briefly in the initial phase of Linux. Then the ext2, ext3, and ext4 variants followed in 1993, 2002, and 2008. The maximum file system size grew from 2 GiB to one exabyte (1,048,576 TiB). Journaling functions have been available since ext3. The compatibility of the different ext file system versions is expressed by the fact that various administration tools still have the version number 2 in the command name, although they can also be used for newer versions: tune2fs or resize2fs thus also work with an ext4 file system.
